Life partners often get the best out of their other halves in the aptest ways. Similar has been the case with Phil Mickelson. Marrying Amy Mickelson in 1996 (four years after he turned pro), Mickelson steadily climbed the ladder of success. Needless to say, he has also been vocal for a long time in expressing his love for his wife.
The year 2009 might have been a pleasant one for Mickelson on the professional front. However, that clearly wasn’t the case on his personal front. In 2009, the former World No. 2 suffered one of the biggest downfalls in his personal life after his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Disturbed by the situation, the American sensation not only temporarily suspended his season but also wrote an earnest note for his wife.
Phil Mickelson expresses himself in a heartfelt message for his wife
After pulling out from a handful of tournaments, Mickelson made a comeback at the US Open. A couple of days before entering the Bethpage Black Course, the then four-time US Open runner-up indulged in a conversation with ‘People’.
During the conversation, he opened up about the situation and said, “Obviously we’re going through a tough time right now.”
Over the years, Mickelson has come out as one of the most passionate golfers of his generation. His love for the game has been clearly visible in his massive performances in the past. However, with Amy Mickelson’s health issues, he took no time in opting to keep golf aside to be with her.
Going ahead in the conversation, he said, “She touches people in a way that people don’t get touched. It’s just right to the heart.”
“She has a way to have an impact on people, the way she looks you in the eye, the way she listens to what you have to say, and genuinely cares,” he further added.
Heading towards the end, he summed up the message by admitting, “She has a quality about her that not many people have.”
Having the support of her wife, the then 38-year-old moved ahead for the US Open Championships, aiming for his maiden win.
